How to Spot a good veterinarian

Today I would like to talk about a very important topic for all of those who intend to or have pets. I love animals, all kinds of animals and there is something that bothers me to watch: people fully trusting themselves and their pets to a veterinarian and often being exploited financially and their pets being victims of abundant and unnecessary tests and treatments.
Me, for example, in addition to other animals, i have dogs since I was five years of age.
I followed them from babies to adulthood, their inherent health problems and consequent death. And I myself was a victim of exploitation by several Veterinary Clinics and specially Veterinary Hospitals. See when we have a pet there is nothing we won’t do for them and when somebody speaks of miraculous costly treatments and operations, even with difficulty, we always find a way to get them for our beloved pets. Often those treatments are completely obsoletes, causing the animal to be subjected to unnecessary treatments which contribute nothing to solve their health problems and those last, valuable times together to be diminished in quality for both: owner and pet.

So that your pet can have an end of life as comfortable and cheerful as possible here is my advice, what I have learned through the years.

First, contrary to what happens in human medicine, Veterinarian Hospitals are centers of animal and human exploitation. And so are animal health insurances. People insure their pets and then go to these Veterinarian Hospitals or franchising where they are recommended all kinds of tests and treatments for a simple tummy ache. And because the owner has his pet insured and therefore does not have to pay more for it he allows him to be subjected to all of the procedures believing he is taking the right decision when in reality he is being the victim of a business of exploitation where who really wins are veterinarians and insurance companies (see there is no pleasure for your pet in taking blood all the time, being vaccinated, receiving sedatives anytime to do an x-ray / ultrasound or simply to clean his teeth!).

There are frightening ads on tv talking about the terrifying consequences of not having your pets dewormed and for owners to go right away talk to their vets!

And owners do all of this because they truly believe they are helping their pet’s health.

How i Take Care of My Dogs

My dogs NEVER did any treatment for their gums or teeth in the vet. I do give them bones and treats to help keep their mouth healthy and it has been working all these years. But you can brush their teeth if really needed with the right brush and toothpaste specially formulated for your pet.

My dogs and my family are dewormed every 3 months and we are all doing great.
My dogs are vaccinated once in a year or every 3 years depending on the Country we live in and they only take the mandatory vaccinations.

My dogs don’t do any exams unless they are showing symptoms of needing them ( normally at old age only) and though sometimes they just don’t need them because with a regular physical exam the vet know what it is right away!

My dogs eat a good food so they won’t miss vitamins and they eat a food which meet their needs: for adults, for puppies, for renal problems, for heart problems, etc. They eat the right quantity for their weight. For example: my two oldest dogs eat renal food in a preventive way because they have high probability of developing renal problems (one has leishmania and the other is very old) and both take supplements.

My dogs wear a flea and tick collar and i substitute them every 3 months.

I cut my dog’s nails whenever and if necessary (actually just one of mine dogs, the oldest one needs it as they tend to naturally wear them when walking).

I bath my dogs one time per month or every 2 months depending on necessity and I groom them myself too if needed (I don’t want to expose them to a foreign and stressful environment). Every now and then, when needed, I clean them with baby wipes.

My oldest dogs have special mattresses for their joints where they love to lie in.

My dogs do walks 2 times a day - 30 minutes every walk (but you can do shorter and more frequent walks for older dogs), have lots of love and are very happy just like this.

My advice to choose a good veterinarian is to:

-       Don’t accept tips from veterinarians who tell you how to choose a good veterinarian!

-       Pay attention to the recommendation of other people (you may get to know some great vets this way);

-       Avoid Veterinarian Hospitals or large Veterinarian Groups with too much exposition on tv or yellow page add;

-       Avoid Clinics with too much staff ( it means they are trying to maximize their clients and the time you will spend with your vet will be shorter);

-       Choose a small clinic with a maximum of 3 veterinarians (would be ideal);

-       Opt for an older vet, might be wiser and experienced and not so greedy ( there are exceptions);

-       Pay the Vet a visit without your pets and get to know the space and the receptionists ( if you don’t like the staff you probably won’t like the vet as veterinarians tend to select staff similar in temperament to themselves);

-       Avoid vet clinics with luxury cars, top of the range in their parking lot belonging to medical staff ( somebody’s pet is paying them, don’t let it to be yours);

-       Find another vet if a vet clearly opposes holistic philosophies or alternative treatments, gives you skeptical looks, makes condescending remarks, ask for exams and tests with no apparent reason ( note: good doctors can know about major problems of your pet just by auscultating them and making a physical exam!);

-       Try to take one pet at a time to the vet or if you have many pets who need vaccination try to schedule a visit at your house so it won’t be such a moment of anxiety for them;

-       Take the vaccination time to ask for a general consultation and check-up for each one of your pets ( auscultation and physical exam);

-       Learn what's normal for your pet, so you recognize the first signs of illness. If a pet's not well, don't wait until he's really sick before you call your vet;

Nowadays, you have the internet to your disposition. If your pet has any general symptoms search in credible websites about it, keep informed.

General things my pets do have:

-       - shake their ears and cry because have pain on them – solvable with a trustable earring solution ( place in their ears every day for a few days)
-      - their eyes are very red and barely can open them – solvable by cleaning with a cotton soaked with warm water several times a day
-       - scratch their ass on the floor – need to be dewormed and so do we
-       - have itching – they need a bath and if the time has come, a new flea/tick collar

If their symptoms persist please consult your veterinarian.

More serious symptoms:

-       Coat Problems
-       Weight loss
-       Loss of body mass in the head
-       Loss of appetite
-       Pies nails
-       Hot nose (fever)
-       Lumps in the body
-       Constant cough

Please consult your vet if your dog presents any of these symptoms.

Note: these are only a few I know that I have seen in some of my dogs

For example, one of my dogs has leishmania and he takes medication every day. Because of his disease once in a while he has fever and less appetite (but these symptoms only last a maximum of one day) and he naturally has pies nails.

Another example, other of my dogs has lumps in the body. But those are benign lymphomas and therefore not harmful.

But I have had other dogs which had more serious problems.
One presented several of these symptoms which strongly developed all together plus renal failure, etc in 2 months lead to his death. There was nothing vets could do, he shut down completely. One moment he was ok, the other he was not.
Other had a degenerative problem, other a cancer, etc.

What I mean is do whatever it takes for your pet when and if needed but take conscience that sometimes there is nothing that can be done… and at such times give your pet all the comfort and love possible so he can spend his last days in peace and not in a cold veterinary clinic subjected to tests.

Living in Harmony with the World

First i want to thank all comments sent to me.
To all of You who enjoy reading my blog and keep on sending messages asking me to write more - THIS IS ALL FOR YOU on behalf of Animals :)

For many of you who fight daily for animal cause what i say on my posts is more than obvious but for general people it is not.

My post today it is called "Living in harmony with the World".
So, how do we live in harmony with the World?

In what regards the Animals of the World i have identified 5 ways of exploitation:

1 - For food
2 - For clothing
3 - For beauty and health purposes
4 - For sports
5 - For entertainment

Nowadays animals are being exploited in these 5 ways.

For Food

If you're a vegan ( no animal products) ignore point number 1. If you are vegetarian ( someone who eats some animal products, see meaning here) you're still hurting animals in some ways - dairy products like eggs, milk and cheese are the result of animal exploitation. Please click here to Go Vegan. In the meantime, buy at least all you can organic.

For Clothing

Animals are being exploited for Clothing: Leather, Silk, Wool are all product of animal exploitation. Please find clothing without cruelty, it is easier than you think. I usually buy everything online, nowadays it is very practical. In big online stores like Zalando, La Redoute, etc you can find all you need searching by product type and return it without a problem. There are very beautiful, resistant products on the market, no one will never notice the difference and you'll be happy knowing you're not contributing to this demonic industry. One tip: for beautiful lingerie try searching for vegetable satin.. ;)

For Beauty and Health Purposes

Animals are being exploited for beauty and health purposes. Go cruelty-free. There is a list of the cruel and cruelty-free products available on the market and where to buy them. It is available at BUAV. I guarantee to you they have the same effect or even better than those you're using. Believe me , i am a demanding consumer. Plus find the best beauty tips in my blog categories and a list of the cruelty-free products i greatly recommend on "Favorites". In relation to drugs try to use natural remedies whenever possible.

For Sports

Animals are being exploited for sports. Any sort of sport which involves animals (hunt, rodeos, dog racing, etc) are exploitation. Refuse to be actively or passively part of these activities. If you want more information on these topic just simply search for "animal cruelty in sports and entertainment"on google or any other search engine.

For Entertainment

Animals are being exploited for entertainment.
Circus, Zoos , Aquariums, Pseudo-Sanctuaries, Animal Actors, Exotic Animals as pets, Horse-Drawn Carriages are all cruel forms of entertainment for animals.
If you love Animals refuse to visit these places and don't lie to your children: animals aren't happy.
Find all about these animal cruel activities here plus once again get more information buy searching on google or any other search engine for "animal cruelty entertainment".
If still you think visiting any of these places in your area, search for the name of the place you are about to visit plus add the words "cruelty animals". The more likely is for you to be shocked with what you'll get but even if you don't please don't contribute for Animal's captivity.
Visit Animals in their natural environment. Not possible? See documentaries on TV.

Be a better person for You, for the Animals, for the World and for your Children.

Thanks Everybody!

Have a nice, cruelty-free, happy life.

The World - Good vs. Evil

I am sorry i have been away for so long. I moved and that took some time. Although i have not had the time to write, every day i had time to share via facebook and twitter important petitions and news.

Sometimes people helping animal cause ask " when is this going to end?". Maybe never. The fact is we have to think of this as a no end story but in our hearts believe and fight for Good to triumph.

The Evil will always exist and so will the Good. So the question might be " who is the strongest? ". Evil people have a stone in their heart, they have no empathy for others suffering and they always try to find a way to harm others. If Good people aren't strong and cold in this fight they can loose.. they can loose their head.. they can loose their strength and worst of all.. they can loose their faith.

So, lets be strong. Lets do all we can every single day to be better persons, better humans. Lets not be indifferents, lets fight all the small and big fights glad to be the chosen to do it. Lets be kind to animals and good human beings and relentless with the bad people. Lets not be afraid. Lets not worry about what other people think. Lets know in our hearts we are doing the right thing. Lets feel good about ourselves. Lets let everybody know we are proud of being human being in its right definition. Lets teach others and spread our faith.

I have written before that "Good actions start at home". So, if you see someone you know, some neighbour, friend, family member, strange mistreating any animal don't turn your back. It is your duty to fight for that animal life and wellbeing. Don't wait for nobody else to do it. Do the Good and Good Things will come to You.

Be good.

Have a nice, cruelty-free, happy life!

Christmas's Spirit

Charity starts at Home

1) If you have pets, treat them like a family member. That’s what they are.

2) Don’t leave them outside. Let them go to the fenced garden during the day but bring them inside, animals like us to keep them company and to be with us.

3) Walk your dogs at least one hour a day – this can be divided in 3 walks of 20 minutes or 2 of 30 minutes. Dogs need to walk outside even if you have a garden.

4) Don’t let them walking outside by themselves – many dogs/cats/others get lost when doing it or someone can harm them.

5) Don’t let them by themselves in the garden when you’re not home – many pets are stolen. If you feel you don’t know much about dogs start watching Cesar Millan show, it is very educative.

6) Have nice and clean arrangements for them, a food that meet their necessities and take them to the vet when need ( routine appointments at least once in a year for vaccination).

7) If your pet is old provide him even more comfort and cares. Just like us they feel more fragile and scared when they’re old.

8) During vacation time take them with you ( find accommodations which gladly accept them), leave them with a reliable friend/family member or in a good hotel.

Don’t be indifferent. Indifference kills

1) When you see a stray dog/cat/other try to find out if he belongs to anyone and if he is ok.

2) If he is ok and he do belong to anybody around, that’s fine. If he doesn’t try to learn more about him, why is he there, who feeds him, where he sleeps, take photos, advertise photos on your social network and send them to Animal Associations.

3) Ask people around if they can also help by doing the same. Don’t quite on him until you find his or a new owner and make sure he is fine everyday (eats and sleeps well).

4) If you can, take him home until you find someone who adopts him.

5) If he is at risk or hurt take him immediately out of there to a veterinary/local Association.

6) Ask local Associations for help, raise funds to help him on the internet, at home, school or work.

7) Don’t expect anyone else to do something or pretend you didn’t see. Community Animals are responsibility of all of Us and indifference do kill!

DO MORE…

1) Get involved at home, school & work – raise funds to help stray dogs and local Associations.

2) Collect & Give food/ medicines/blankets/leashes/etc to local Associations

3) Volunteer at local Animal Associations and help clean the kennel, walk the dogs, feed them, love them…

4) Take photos and advertise one or all of them on your social page

5) Adopt an Animal from a Local Shelter or rescue one from the Street

6) Get involved – ask your chamber to pay more attention to stray dogs, to provide them good conditions while they are in municipal shelters or to help Associations.

7) Buy gifts from Animal Associations to your family and friends

8) Offer an Animal Association membership

9) Give Associations all the stuff you have you don’t use anymore so they can sell and raise funds or even use them.

10) Give any old blankets, old dog beds or leashes you have at home to your local Associations

11) Don’t buy your pet! Adopt one.

AND MORE...

1) Write a letter to a leashed backyard dog owner and try to bring awareness to what his dog feels.. or unleash him yourself and take him with you..

2) Organize meetings and groups for Animal Defence

3) Advertise your ideas on the Street by talking to people/distributing flyers/etc  raising awareness to this problematic

4) Sign petitions for the Animal Cause (available on my twitter)

5) Be present at manifests which have the intent of helping Animals

6) And more, there’s always more you can do, use your imagination!.. search the web for Animal Organizations

Remember, we are their voices! They can’t speak for themselves but we can!

Christmas's Shopping

Christmas is here and with it lots of shopping.

I have already made mine, i like to anticipate and have time to search the best products, compare, etc. Most of mine shopping are online, nowadays it seems easier and comfortable. Every single present is cruelty-free and it is quite simple to have ethic when shopping because these days every product, clothing, etc have a perfect cruelty-free match and many times even cheaper. Also, if you cannot find what you're looking for near you you can import that item. It arrives in a few days and even with the VAT and "handle and care" it still compensates.

First, find your favourite cosmetics/personal products in BUAV list.

Then, buy them in stores like Big Green Smile or Animal Aid Shop, or simply search for the product you're looking for in search engines like google and add the word "buy" to your search. If you're in one store and you're not sure you should buy the product or not, search for the Leaping Bunny:

Be aware: is this Bunny and not other kind of bunny as several Non Certified Companies have Rabbits in their products and phrases like "we do not test on animals" to try to mistake the consumers.

If You're buying Clothing don't buy any with wool, leather or animal fur, silk or down. Nowadays you can find beautiful clothes which were made without any harm  to animals.

I have just bought this Coat from Mod Cloth and i love IT! It arrived from the USA in 5 days, i had only to pay the VAT and the carrier. It was a good price for such an outstanding, original, Cruelty-Free Coat!

And they have Lots of Cruelty-Free Clothing, Shoes and Accessories...

Find anything You want in this PETA’s Shopping Guide to Compassionate Clothing.
The following companies are either vegan or else sell alternatives to leatherfur, or down.

Or if you're buying in another Store simply check what your clothe is made with before buying.
